چکیده

On the basis of reciprocity, interference between two opposite paths ean be argued to be constructive in the backscattering direction of, for instance, a slab geometry, and exactly as large as the conventional diffuse background calculated from (1.8). At backscattering, the equation of radiative transfer is thus 100 % wrong! As always, the width of an interference effect is roughly given by the wavelength divided by the typical distance between two typical points of scattering, in this case the mean free path, giving !:1() ::::J l/kf [113]. One can still argue as to what mean free path should be used here: the transport or the scattering mean free path. Although a physical argument favors the first (recall Fig. 1.2), a rigorous eonfirmation for anisotropie scatterers (for which both mean free paths differ) has only been given recently [114, 115]. Thus

Coherent Backscattering of Light by Cold Atoms

Light propagating in an optically thick sample experiences multiple scattering. It is now known that interferences alter this propagation, leading to an enhanced backscattering, a manifestation of weak localization of light in such diffuse samples. This phenomenon has been extensively studied with classical scatterers. In this letter we report the first experimental evidence for coherent backsc...

Low-coherence enhanced backscattering beyond diffusion.

An analytical theory for coherent backscattering (CBS) of low-coherence light is presented. An expression linking the CBS profile to the radial distribution of the incoherent backscattered light is derived when the incident light is partially spatially coherent. The backscattered snake light, which has experienced exactly two large-angle scatterings, is taken into account together with the diff...

Anderson Mobility Gap Probed by Dynamic Coherent Backscattering.

We use dynamic coherent backscattering to study one of the Anderson mobility gaps in the vibrational spectrum of strongly disordered three-dimensional mesoglasses. Comparison of experimental results with the self-consistent theory of localization allows us to estimate the localization (correlation) length as a function of frequency in a wide spectral range covering bands of diffuse transport an...

Coherent Backscattering and Anderson Localization of Light

In this review we discuss localization of waves by multiple scattering. In the weak case, also known as coherent backscattering, there is a twofold enhancement of the reflected intensity in the back direction. We discuss the origin of this effect, its shape with reflection angle as well as the influence of finite sample size and absorption on this shape. This discussion of the properties of the...
